A leader in intelligent transportation systems (ITS), Southwest Research Institute®(SwRI®) is an independent R&D organization with over 20 years of experience working with state and local transportation agencies. A portion of all proceeds from ActiveVision will be re-invested to add new sensing capabilities and enhance existing features, which allows clients to influence upcoming technology solutions and tailor ActiveVision services over time.
SwRI is a recognized leader in connected vehicle technology development and deployment, having supported numerous projects since the Federal Highways Administration (FHWA) CV program’s inception. It has funded multiple internal research and development (IR&D) projects to enhance our technical understanding and evaluation capability related to existing and emerging V2X technologies. SwRI has developed complete retrofit kits for commercial vehicles to provide V2X safety applications that were used in vehicles operating in the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) Safety Pilot Model Deployment. SwRI also maintains a closed test track and other infrastructure with existing V2X communications equipment and applications deployed, including Signal Phase and Timing (SPaT). SwRI also has been and continues to be actively engaged in SAE V2X Communications Committees, including serving as document sponsors and maintaining voting representation in multiple technical, including those for DSRC and C-V2X.
As a member of the OmniAir Consortium, SwRI has supported development of testing tools and procedures for connected devices. These tools and procedures will support certification efforts that ensure devices conform to relevant industry standards and meet performance requirements. SwRI has developed and used test tools for vehicle onboard units (OBUs) as well as infrastructure-based road side units (RSUs). Our unique facilities allow us to support static bench testing, as well as mobile track testing of the devices.
These tools and procedures will support certification efforts by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) that ensure devices conform to relevant industry standards and meet performance requirements.
SwRI has been working in the automated vehicle space for over 14 years, working for a wide range of clients ranging from the United States military to commercial operations in the passenger vehicle, trucking, transit, mining and agriculture spaces. It has incorporated various levels of autonomy on over 20 different types of vehicles, often with multiples of certain types, ranging in size from golf carts to Class VIII trucks and military tracked vehicles with transit busses planned for late 2020. The SwRI AV team brings a full-feature autonomy suite as background capability to be leveraged to solve unique and specialized client challenges.
